At the origins of design with Carlo Bugatti

The queen of Italy of that time Elena of Savoy meets Carlo Bugatti. She compliments him saying that she likes his furniture in "Moorish style"very much.
Bugatti's proud reply is : "You're wrong, Majesty, this is my style!"

Not bad the reply of the artist, born in Milan in 1856!

Sculptor, designer, architect and science passionate, Bugatti collaborated with numerous talented artists over the years.

A few examples? His friend and brother-in-law Giovanni Segantini, the painter Emilio Longoni and the ebony specialist Eugenio Quarti.

Throughout his life he devoted himself to the design and construction of furnishings.
His productions are extremely original and are distinguished by the quality of the materials used and the original and bizarre lines.

Although characterized by an exotic taste, a Moorish influence and an intense decorativism, his works can not be assimilated to styles in vogue in the early twentieth century.

In short, these kind of furnishings had never been seen in the last century.

From the culture of 19th century furniture to the concept of Design

The reference universe of Carlo Bugatti is that of everyday life, made of objects of common use that the artist beautifies and revisits.
Chairs, sofas, armchairs, tables and writing desks lose their merely functional value.
They become sculptures and dream-like objects, characterized by absolute originality and unusual lines.

The designer's success is overwhelming and his talent is recognized internationally. From the Italian Exhibition of London in 1888 to the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1900 to the one in Turin in 1902, the works produced by Bugatti are a great success everywhere.

Thanks to its experiments, Bugatti has been able to anticipate some solutions that will become common in the of the mid 20th century productions.
